The consultation closed on 8 April (votes stayed open a little longer due to a technical glitch but we used the data from 8 April as promised). The consultation done on paper with traders and shoppers in the market also closed that day. There was a great response to both and the results are posted on our main site.
The market as it is todayFriends of Brixton Market are seeking your opinion about proposals for the market!
We are working with Lambeth Council and the landlords of Brixton Village market (aka Granville Arcade) on a project which would potentially see the Council funding local artists to place artworks in and around Brixton Village market.
Please help us by answering the questions below and/or leaving a comment with your thoughts.
As you answer the questions, please take into account things like whether you think they are suitable to character etc as well as your own feelings.
Overall Theme:
Brixton is a community of many cultures. This proposal aims to marry Brixton’s heritage cultures within a vibrant visual extravaganza to re-ignite interest and drive shopping in Brixton market by making Brixton Village a nicer and more interesting place to shop. The artworks themselves are being proposed as a catalyst for getting the landlords to commit to vital maintenance and redecoration. The art refers to home interiors, surfaces and designs would be mixed and matched with available areas of the market so as to play with notions of ‘inside’ and ‘outside’ in unexpected ways.
Proposal 1: Lampshades Installation
We propose a series of quirky, colourful, larger than life lampshades like the ones below by local artist Charlotte Squire (who’s studio is in the market). They are designed to replace or fit inbetween existing metal dome lampshades within the connecting side avenues.
Options 1-3 are inspired by domestic lampshades and fabrics found in the market. In Option 1 (only) the existing lampshades would be replaced and put in storage. In Options 2 and 3, the lampshades would be in addition to existing lighting.
Options 4 – 5 are chandeliers made from plastic Tupperware bought in and around the market.

Proposal 2: Textile Pattern printing and figures
Areas of the walls could be livened up using a variety of design devices
such as patterned wallpaper, either real or evoked through use of paint,
stencils, mosaics etc, and imagery can be embedded into the designs
incorporating references that are specific to Brixton. In the following
ideas by local artist Helen Murphy she has sourced patterns from African
textiles sold within the market, and constructed her own patterns from
photos of market produce.

Proposal 3: Glowing Lights
Three lighting proposals below play with the idea of having the indoor environment contrasting against the (almost) outside environment of the avenues. The pieces would relate to Brixton through the use of colours and items from the market than can be used to accessorise the lights. Steps will be taken to make the installation sustainable and environmentally friendly by using durable materials and energy efficient technologies.
These works would be done by Show & Tell who work in Lambeth and recently showed their work in one of the pop-up shops in the market itself.
